When I was 14, I chose not to date until I had graduated high school. I never wavered on this decision my freshman and sophomore years of high school. But junior year? Well, I was crushing hard on someone and could not remember why on earth I committed to no dating in high school. That winter, my youth group had a lock-in and one of my really close friends who was 2 years older than me and so had already graduated high school came to help out. I had previously talked to her about my crush and my decision not to date in high school. Around 3 AM, I asked her if we could chat. She and I then grabbed a piece of paper and brainstormed all the pros and cons of dating in high school.

If your middle school child wants to start dating, you might think twice. A recent study of teens living in northeast Georgia found that early dating interferes with school success and leads to other bad things. The Healthy Teens Longitudinal Study followed over students for seven years, from the sixth through 12th grades. It looked at frequency of dating in relationship to high school dropout rates and teacher ratings of study skills.
The findings were published in the Journal of Research on Adolescence. Some students never or hardly ever dated from middle school through high school and these students had the best study skills. Throughout the study, students who dated more were rated by teachers as having worse study skills. The earlier and more frequently a child dated, especially starting in middle school, the more likely he or she was to have used alcohol or drugs. The lead researcher speculates that early dating is just one aspect of a pattern of high-risk behaviors.

My ex-husband and I met in high school during the second half of our senior year. I had been in several long and serious relationships and was sick of having my heart broken. He had never had a girlfriend before. After a few months of just being friends, we started dating. We were spending a lot of time together, and he had been integrated into our group of friends.

Obviously we go to school to learn, but what if we fall in love with someone over there? When teens come to high school they meet other students and they start to mature as they age. I have realized that there are some things that are really fun and some things that are not so fun. Being in a relationship teaches you new things and makes you more mature. Having a girlfriend or boyfriend can offer a different perspective on the high school experience.
In those years many guys in relationships are excited that their girlfriends have gotten them to try new things. When you first get out of this comfort zone, exciting new things come to your life which create memories that will last a lifetime. Also, for the first time in life you face the fact that you get to know a person completely inside out. Such things can be carved into a lifelong memory, and could potentially be some of the best high school memories.
When you are very young, you do not think about a lot of things, especially things like trying to generally understand the opposite sex. Why are girls crying even when everything is okay? Why do not young men know how they feel? In any case, it is important to strive to understand the opposite sex, as you will sooner or later need that in life. There is little opportunity to actually talk to girls, and a good number of people need the practice, and why just not start with that in high school.

Dating in High School: The Pros and Cons
Depends on what you mean by “worth it”. If you mean getting married, it’s going to take divine intervention to make that work. If you mean just exploring your emotions as a teenager without huge expectations, it’s definitely a fun way to spend your time. In any case, I wouldn’t plan out whether or not you intend to become attracted to someone — if it happens, let it, and see how it impacts your studies.
As far as your career goals go, I imagine that you won’t have a hard time getting into college for psychology; it’s not a terribly competitive field. In terms of time commitment, I can say from personal experience that you can succeed in high school and have a relationship; I’ve been a serial dater since then and am having no trouble at all in higher education.
